Alterglobalisation. Subjects, Cultures and Movements

Antimo L. Farro

Key words:

Alterglobalisation. Subjects, Cultures and Movements

Abstract:

The alterglobal movement consists of a linked but differentiated collective action, with the aim of critiquing and pursuing alternatives to existing forms of globalisation. The differences inherent within this action are demonstrated most clearly by a consideration of the positions assumed by the four main components that constitute the movement. Individual and group participation in collective action are in turn defined in terms of subjectivity and culture. These factors shape the cultural foundations that enable channels of communication to be activated, and living spaces to be constructed, through which the movement can develop its initiatives. Thus culture is fundamental to the construction of the movement, defining its signifying principles and allowing social and political goals to be established.
