UNIVERSITY: HOW A SMALL UNIVERSITY CAN CONTRIBUTE TO GLOBAL GOVERNANCE
Central European University
4. ACTIVITIES
Inspired by the civic commitment dimension of its mission CEU carries out a large array of activities that are not strictly classroom or even campus-based. Most of these activities are directly connected with the preoccupation for transnational policy and global governance. In particular, CEU tries to help create or strengthen regional identity, including a certain sense of regional solidarity, and also awareness that problems in the region may require transnational solutions. Moreover, in a number of cases, CEU works with other partners to propose and implement specific transnational policy solutions. For example, in 2000 an industrial accident in Romania resulted in a regional environmental disaster, with severe pollution of the Tisza river which flows across several countries of the region. CEU organized a conference bringing together government and NGO representatives from all countries concerned, as well as representatives of the media. The conference resulted in a process that eventually contributed to the establishment of a regional mechanism to monitor and prevent such disasters in the future. A parallel process was initiated regarding the contribution of media from these countries to monitoring environmental aspects, including in relation to transferred investment.
