OPEN SOCIETY AFTER 1989

Andrzej Lechowicz

1. CHANGES
Democratic form of governing came after 1989. People were not prepared for such sudden change. They were afraid of “unknown” and didn’t actually know how they should begin their “careers” in a fully democratic system – as they understood it. It was quite obvious in which direction our new democratic society will go. Since then it was following other society, more advanced in democratic system, with adapting the same institutions and organizing life of an individual citizen very often based on a smaller, local society . Such kind of process was actually very difficult and it was quite hard to make any significant changes at that time. People were utterly used to old communist system, which organized citizens’ life from the bottom up to the top. Before the transformation Polish society was organized very well by the governance forces (in a authoritarian way off course), but without possibility for an individual to realize many useful ideas by his own initiative. For some people that situation was pretty comfortable. They were not expected to do anything, neither by governance nor any other institution. They enjoyed their passiveness.
